Desperate times call for deperate measures…why else would you steal money from your sick, nursing home living, fixed income having Grandma.
A Haughton man was arrested Monday on six counts of forgery, resulting in nearly a $4,000 loss for a local bank, according to a news release from the Bossier Parish Sheriff’s Office.
Phillip Scott Hoffman, 27, of the 1500 block of Camp Zion Road, took and wrote six checks on his ill grandmother’s account, the release stated.
And then mom solidifies a crappy Mother’s Day present this year from her son.
“Ruth Hoffman, Phillip’s mother, is the power of attorney over his grandmother and the co-account holder for her checking account with Barksdale Federal Credit Union,” a news release reported. “The grandmother is in a retirement facility in Shreveport and has a debilitating illness, so her checkbook stays with Ruth.”
The signature on the check was that of the grandmother. Ruth Hoffman told the bank her mother has not been able to sign her name for more than a year, adding there was no way she could have written the check.
Barksdale Federal Credit Union notified Ruth Hoffman on Aug. 24 that Phillip Hoffman had tried to cash one of the checks on which she ordered a stop payment, the news release stated.
Hoffman was arrested, transported and booked into the Bossier Maximum Security Facility. His bond is set at $30,000.
